8-year-old cancer fighter gets an overwhelmingly warm welcome at school
Bridget Kelly, an eight-year-old student at Merrymount Elementary School in Quincy, Massachusetts, was going back to school after a hiatus of fifteen months. She had spent the time fighting cancer and undergoing a stem cell transplant.
The little girl was in for a big surprise on January 2, when she finally returned to school. As Bridget walked in, she was met by hundreds of students, parents, teachers and police officers holding colorful signs welcoming her back to school. It was an incredibly warm welcome the Kelley family will never forget.
“It was almost overwhelming,” Bridget’s mother, Megan Kelley, told TODAY. “She felt so special and so welcomed after such a long and hard road.”
“Her classmates wanted to let her know, ‘You were out for 15 months, but we absolutely did not forget about you,” said Kristin Healy, a school parent who helped organize the gathering.
