This engineer develops cheap, transparent concrete that can reduce your power consumption by 30%
When it comes to the most polluting industries in the world, the first name that comes to mind is the plastic industry. But the cement industry is no better. In fact, it has been reported that if the cement industry were a country, it would be the third-largest carbon dioxide emitter in the world with up to 2.8 billion tonnes, surpassed only by China and the US.
Cement industry is responsible for 8% of the global CO2 emissions. This statistic troubled a 27-year-old Civil Engineer from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India and he decided to do something about it.
He ended up developing a transparent concrete that partially utilizes industrial waste in the place of cement. This switch helps in reducing CO2 emissions by reducing the cement consumption and can reduce electricity bills by 30%.
It took Ramansh Bajpai ten months of hard work and several failed attempts to finally perfect the formula. The rectangular-shaped concrete is made from plastic optical fibers, steel and industry waste (ground granulated blast furnace slag).
The use of industrial waste further ensures that the cost of the transparent concrete is 15% less than regular cement. In terms of durability, it is 23% stronger and 5% lighter.
