Tribal man gets lynched for allegedly stealing rice as onlookers click selfies with him – Rest in peace, Humanity

A hungry, mentally challenged man allegedly steals rice and groceries from a shop. He gets beaten to death by a mob. Instead of coming to his rescue, people click selfies with the helpless man.

This has become a world we all should be scared of living in! Totally devoid of sympathy and humanity. What makes matters worse is the fact that this incidence took place in the South Indian state of Kerala, which prides itself in being one of the few progressive-minded, highly literate states of the country.

Mob lynching and senseless violence are fast becoming an epidemic in India. The country has witnessed honor killings, acid attacks, brutal rapes, people getting lynched for eating beef, people suspected of cow-slaughter getting beaten to death… the list is endless.

Now is the time to question ourselves – is this the world we want to raise our kids in? What happened to virtues like empathy, kindness, mercy, love for our fellow men? What could be the reason that a mob didn’t think twice before lynching a mentally unstable man? And what kind of sick mentality caused people to click videos and selfies with the poor man while he was being subjected to barbaric torture?

I don’t have answers to any of these questions. And I am really ashamed of being called a human today. If this is what humans do, I guess animals are far better.
